Using Leaderboards to Gamify Learning

Leaderboards are a powerful way to boost learner engagement by introducing friendly competition into your training programs. By showcasing top performers mid-course, you can motivate learners to stay active and maintain high performance throughout their learning journey.

How Leaderboards Work

Our leaderboard system identifies top performers based on three key criteria:

  • 100% reply rate - Learners who respond to all messages

  • 100% accuracy rate - Learners who answer all questions correctly

  • Response time - Among qualifying learners, rankings are determined by how quickly they respond to their most recent questions

We typically showcase the top 5 performers, which can be segmented by region, department, team, or any other relevant field in your data.

Setting Up Your Leaderboard Process

1. Contact Your CSM

To get started with leaderboards, reach out to your Customer Success Manager (CSM). They will:

  • Pull data from your enrollments and response exports

  • Identify qualifying learners based on the criteria above

  • Provide you with the ranked results for your chosen time period

2. Schedule Regular Updates

Work with your CSM to establish a regular cadence for leaderboard updates. Many clients find weekly or bi-weekly updates work well to maintain momentum without overwhelming learners.

Creating Engaging Leaderboard Messages

Using the Template

We recommend using visually appealing templates that make your leaderboard announcements feel exciting and celebratory. The template should include:

  • Eye-catching graphics and colors

  • Clear ranking information

  • Motivational messaging

  • Recognition for top performers

Customizing Your Template

For first-time setup:

  1. Get your design team to put together a template that you can reuse (or feel free to use our template above)

  2. Upload your leaderboard template image to ChatGPT

  3. Ask the following: "Give me a hyper detailed JSON of this image, formatted for an image generation prompt. It should include everything about it, including styling, text, and colors."

  4. Save this prompt for future use

For weekly updates:

  1. Use your saved, detailed prompt

  2. Simply update the names, regions, and any other variable text

  3. Generate your new leaderboard image

  4. Send it via a nudge to your learners

Best Practices

  • Timing: Send leaderboards mid-course when engagement typically dips

  • Frequency: Regular but not overwhelming - weekly works well for most programs

  • Recognition: Celebrate achievements with enthusiastic language

Delivery Options

Once your leaderboard is ready, use our nudge feature to distribute it across your chosen delivery method - Slack, SMS, or Teams - ensuring all learners see the rankings and stay motivated to participate.

Remember, the goal is to create positive competition that drives engagement while maintaining a supportive learning environment for all participants.
